AM Kindergarten 8:52 - 11:32

Outside supervision begins at 8:40 a.m. Students arriving prior to this time are not supervised. For the safety and protection of students we require ALL VISITORS to report to the office. After school, students are expected to go home by 3:35 pm

School Agendas

Through the committed use of the student agendas, our students are organized and communication between home and school is at a very high level. The time our staff devotes to home communication and the hours spent after school reinforcing the importance to our students reaps large rewards in terms of developing personal life skills.

Friday Envelope and Newsletter

A school newsletter will be distributed with your youngest child on the Friday after staff meeting every month. We also have a “Friday envelope” system and endeavor to send all school communication home in this envelope on Fridays. We utilize the Student Agendas daily to communicate homework assignments and other pertinent information.

Early Dismissal

Staff meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month except September. All students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. There is no Kindergarten on early dismissal days.

Attendance

If your child will not be attending school, you are requested to phone the school ([780] 460-3737) to give us this information. The school's answering machine is in operation from 4:00 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. each day. Should a child be reported absent by the teacher, without this prior notification, the school will phone the parents for confirmation of the child's whereabouts. There is sometimes a request by parents to excuse their child for a longer period of time, particularly at Christmas or Spring Break so that he/she may accompany parents on a trip. While it is possible to catch up on some of the classroom work and activities, nothing can replace the learning that takes place in the classroom. All students are affected by an extended absence. We appreciate your support by keeping such absences to a minimum and being notified prior to these absences.

Administration will follow up persistent lateness or absences.

School Phones

To avoid disruption of classroom instruction, students will be allowed to use the school phones in emergency situations only. Parents are requested to convey personal messages to their children prior to the children leaving for school in the morning. Students and parents/guardians are requested to make plans for after school before coming to school in the morning. Children are required to go straight home and check with their parents/guardians if they wish to change their after-school plans. Students are welcome to use the phone in the office if they need to contact their parents for transportation or school situations.

Student Dress

Student dress is expected to be in good taste and to be reflective of the nature of our school. This is especially relevant to T-shirts and ‘summer’ wear.

Students are required to have indoor and outdoor shoes. School and fire regulations require that students wear shoes at all times.

Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 are required to change for physical education class and are expected to wear appropriate gym gear and running shoes in order to participate in physical education activities. Hats are not to be worn inside the school.

Bicycles, Skateboards, Scooters, Rollerblades and Heelies

Bicycle racks are provided for those children who choose to ride their bicycles. However, this area is unsupervised and if bicycles become damaged or vandalized, the school cannot assume liability for them. All bicycles brought to school should be locked in the bike rack. The bike rack area is off limits during school times.

Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller blades and heelies are not to be used on school property.

Footwear

Our students are fortunate to have a large, safe playground. To assist us in providing a supervised play area the woods, parking lot, skating rinks and shack are out of bounds to students. Students should wear suitable footwear according to weather conditions. All footwear must be removed at the entrance and indoor shoes/runners must be worn for reasons of health and safety. Since shoes and boots are occasionally misplaced, it is important that they be clearly labeled with child's name.

Lost and Found

The school cannot be responsible for the personal property of students, so once again - it is very important that these be clearly marked with the child's name. Found articles are deposited in the Lost and Found Box located outside the gym. Students and parents are requested to check for lost items periodically. Unclaimed articles of any value are boxed and forwarded to an appropriate charity at the Christmas Break, Spring Break and at Year-end.

Parking, Passenger and Bus Zones

We have only sufficient room in our parking lot for our staff. Please do not park in the school parking lot. For safety reasons, please do not let your child jaywalk, walk through the parking lot or walk between parked cars. Parents and students should use the sidewalk and nearby patrolled crosswalk to cross the street. Safety Patrols are on duty before and after school to assist students and are to be respected and obeyed when on duty.

Milk Sales

Chocolate and white milk will be sold at the beginning of each lunch hour for 75 cents or a milk sheet can be purchased for $15.00.

Emergency Evacuations

In the event of perceived or explicit emergency, our primary responsibility is, of course, the safety of all individuals within the school. As per our regularly held fire drills, students will, in the event of an evacuation, exit the school through designated exits. From their designated marshalling areas, attendance will be sent to the front of the school to confirm 100% evacuation has occurred. Should we be in a position to evacuate the school grounds as well, we will proceed to Albert Lacombe School 50 Gainsborough Ave. 459-4478. Over the course of the year, we will be practicing “lock down” drills as well, whereby all individuals will gather in secure inside locations.

Celebrations of Learning

Our Celebrations of Learning are intended to provide an opportunity for parents and school to exchange information and develop goals pertaining to a child's progress in school. All parents are encouraged to attend these interviews. In addition to regularly scheduled times, other interviews may be arranged whenever a parent or teacher deems it necessary.

Student Evaluation & Reporting Schedule

Each teacher is responsible for determining the basis for evaluating pupil progress in his/her grade or subject area. Student progress is determined through the use of assignments, projects, day-to-day observations, portfolios, quizzes and tests. Three reporting periods occur during the school year. Progress is formally reported through written progress reports in November, March and June and through parent-teacher interviews in October and February. In the interim, teachers may also utilize phone calls, e-mail, the agenda and/or notes to communicate growth and concerns.
